Training Methods
Almost all Hokutou Ryu training involves direct physical contact. This does not mean 'full contact' in the sense of trying to beat the hell out of each other, with the toughest person left standing. Instead the various exercises and techniques are practised with one (or more) person taking the role of aggressor and the other person practising their skills at dealing with the attack. Sometimes the training can be gentle and co-operative, such as when learning new moves for the first time. At other times the attacks can be forceful and unpredictable, if for example, the exercise is aimed at developing awareness and evasion.
In all cases, without exception, training exercises are geared to the ability of the participants. No one is ever thrown in at the deep end.
Hokutou Ryu Techniques
Hokutou Ryu Jiu Jitsu uses a wide variety of techniques, and more importantly teaches them in a realistic context. The various moves include evasion techniques, blocks, restraints, punches, kicks, elbow strikes, strikes to vulnerable areas, throwing techniques, joint locks, disarming techniques, finger locks, arm breaking techniques, defences against knives and baseball bats, strangles, grappling techniques, how to defend while seated at a table, and much more. The only martial arts techniques which Hokutou Ryu Jiu Jitsu does not cover at all is the use of weapons, for example Japanese swordsmanship or the use of the various 'martial arts weapons'.
Techniques really need to be seen and experienced rather than described in writing. To learn more about Hokutou Ryu techniques contact us through the contacts link, or better still turn up at a session and speak to an instructor.
Is the juniors training the same as the adults?
No. Although many of the principles of skill and movement are the same, children's Jiu Jitsu has a number of techniques removed. The training is also taught in a more playful atmosphere to accommodate the fact that children tend to have a shorter attention span than adults. Junior's classes are taught separately from adults. If you have any questions ask us by following the contacts link and one of the specialist children's instructors will send you an answer.
Is there any difference between the way men and women train?
None whatsoever. Success at Hokutou Ryu Jiu Jitsu is dependent on intelligence and determination. If anyone doubts that women can be as skilled as men we invite them to come and see our senior female members train.
